Skin tags, acrochordons and cutaneious tags all refer to small, fleshy growths that hang from the skin by a think stalk.

No, skin tags are not dangerous.

 

They are classified at tumours or odd growths that serve no purpose in the body.  Skin tags are benign tumours, unlike cancerous or malignant counterparts.

 

Skin tags can become irritated or infected in they are rubbed continuously against other services, for example, bra straps, necklaces.  You should only worry if a skin tag grows, changes colour or starts to bleed of itch.  You should see your GP immediately if this happens.

There is no exact single cause that is linked to skin tags.  There are factors that do influence the prevalence of skin tags.

 

Locations on the body – they tend to appear in parts of the body that often experience friction, such as the armpits, groin and other folds of the skin.

 

Age – more common in adults especially those aged over 60

 

Underlying health conditions such as obesity and diabetes.  Research has shown that the presence of multiple skin tags may be an early sign of diabetes.  Pregnant ladies are more prone to developing skin tags due to hormonal changes in their body.

 

Skin tags are not a result of poor hygiene.

Cryosurgery – liquid nitrogen is applied to the skin tag, freezing it off

Electrocautery – A hot blade of an electrocautery tool is ued to burn through the base of the skin tag

Surgical removal – a local anaesthetic is given prior to skin tag being cut off using surgical scissors or a scalpel, the wound is cauterized afterwards to stop any bleeding and to prevent the tag from regrowing

You may resume your normal daily activities but we do advise no strenuous exercise for 24 hours and no alcohol for 24 hours post surgery.
